The Process

The Big Day!

1-2 weeks after a baby bird has weaned, and if he has kept his weight stable while eating on his/her own, they’ll be ready to go to their new home. During your scheduled appointment, you will come meet the babies in our home. You will not need to bring a travel cage. It is better for the birds to travel in the sensory-comfort of our travel boxes. There are many frightening things outside and when traveling in the car, on top of the dramatic change in temperature. It will be less stressful for them to travel without all the added sensory stimulations. We will provide you the travel box.

We will also send a care package home with you that will include the food that your baby is currently eating. It is very important not to change their diet during their transition home. They could stop eating and perish! (see Your Care Package for more info) Once they are established and thriving in your home, you can then slowly start to change their diet to one that you or your vet prefers.

Don’t wait until after you pick up your new buddie to go shopping for his cage! Unless you’re traveling to their first vet appointment, your new friend needs to go straight home from our aviary. Make this transition as easy as possible for him/her. Have his cage ready before you pick him up. And when you get home, let him spend the first day getting to know his new space. Talk to him, or put on some music–our aviary is far from quiet! Silence can mean danger to birds, so they’ll appreciate some tunes to break the ice.

Give your buddy some time to adjust to his new home. Don’t overwhelm him that first couple of days. Hang a millet near his water—this will help him quickly find the essentials. If you become concerned about your baby during that first week, please contact us right away.
